Muhammad
Ali vs. Sonny Liston
This
contest went the distance but, with the exception of Round 4, the
outcome was never in doubt. Ali gave Liston a boxing lesson, moving and
dancing without letup, relying on jabs and combinations, and landing
punches from all angles with 63 percent accuracy. Ali seemed to slow
down in Round 4, allowing Liston to score big with crushing uppercuts
and body shots. Ali regrouped in the next round and it was off to the
races again with Ali dancing out of range of Liston's attack, making the
big man miss and tire, while scoring repeatedly with jabs and a flurry
of combinations that had Liston struggling to keep his feet by fight's
end.
WINNER:
Muhammad Ali (unanimous decision)
Joe
Louis vs. Jack Johnson
A stunning
upset! Louis displayed his typical punching power and accuracy, but suffered a
cut inside his right eyebrow in the opening round that worsened as the fight
continued and reopened several times, forcing the referee to finally stop the
fight early in Round 4.
WINNER:
Jack Johnson (TKO-cuts, 0:33, R4)
Gene
Tunney vs. Mike Tyson
Tyson,
in classic fashion, pressed and stalked his opponent from the
opening bell while delivering a punishing attack that had sent a tough
but bloodied Tunney to the canvas four times before the ref finally
stopped the fight in Round 10.
WINNER:
Mike Tyson (TKO, 2:48, R10)
Jack
Dempsey
vs. Rocky Marciano
This one
was brutal and non-stop. Both fighters slugged it out pounded each other
relentlessly for 11 rounds before the fight was finally stopped. The only
knockdown in the fight came in Round 4 when Dempsey walked into a Marciano
cross that sent him to the canvas for a five count. Were it not for a cut
Marciano suffered in Round 5, the two might still be going at it. As the fight
continued, that cut would reopen several times before the ring doctor called
an end to to the punishment early in the 11th round, with both fighters dazed
and laboring.
WINNER:
Jack Dempsey (TKO-cuts, 0:42, R11)
