Cards still alive, force final game in NL playoff

BROOKLYN (Oct. 2) -- The St. Louis Cardinals bounced back from a Game 1 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers, nipping Brooklyn, 4-3, on a clutch eighth-inning hit by Walker Cooper, forcing a final showdown in Game 3 for the National League flag.

Cooper’s hit, a double that scored Enos Slaughter from second, broke a 3-3 tie, and Cards starter  Johnny Beazley shut down Brooklyn in their final two at bats to seal the win.

Beazley, who had been a reliable stopper for St. Louis all season, had control problems early, but made key pitches when needed to keep his team in the game. Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Curt Davis had problems of his own, finding himself down, 2-0, after allowing back-to-back hits to the first two batters he faced, who later scored on a ribbie double by Stan Musial and a sacrifice fly by Cooper.

Three walks and a pair of hits off of Beazley helped Brooklyn tie the score in the second, before Davis’ ribbie single in the fourth put Brooklyn up, 3-2. Beazley then settled in allowing just one hit and holding Brooklyn scoreless over the next five innings, enabling the Cards to capitalize on Cooper’s tie-breaking double in the eighth.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at Ebbets Field in the final playoff game that will decide the National League championship.

Brooklyn upends Cards in playoff opener

ST. LOUIS (Sept. 30) -- Dixie Walker’s bases loaded double off of Mort Cooper with two out in the eighth inning lifted Brooklyn to a 4-2 win in Game 1 of the best-of-three playoff for the National League pennant.

Cooper, who had breezed through seven innings, took a 2-1 lead into the eighth before loading the bases on back-to-back walks to Dolph Camilli and Ducky Medwick with Pee Wee Reese on third. Walker, who had singled in three previous at bats, then lined a hanging curve ball to the gap in right center, clearing the bases and putting Brooklyn on top, 4-2.

The Cardinals mounted a comeback in their half of the eighth, loading the bases off of reliever Larry French, before the Dodgers went to the bullpen for the fourth time, calling on their ace fireman Hugh Casey, who struck out Whitey Kurowski and Johnny Hopp to end the inning.

Cooper, a 21-game winner for St. Louis, had allowed one run on only three hits before running into trouble in the eighth. Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Kirby Higbe, despite issuing five walks, held St. Louis to just two runs in six innings of work before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh.

Les Webber, who worked an inning of relief for Brooklyn, was credited with the win, while Casey posted his 15th save.
