July Highlights

AMERICAN LEAGUE

July 5
l Red Sox first baseman Tony Lupien went 5 for 5 at the plate, and starter Joe Dobson improved his record to 10-1, shutting out the St. Louis Browns, 9-0, in the second game of a twin bill at Fenway Park. 

July 9 
l Chicago White Sox righthander John Humphries shut out the St. Louis Browns, 8-0, in the second game of a doubleheader, ending a nine-game skid by the Sox. St. Louis took the opener, 6-2.  

July 10

l The Cleveland Indians downed the New York Yankees, 5-2, in the second game of a twin bill, snapping New York's nine-game winning streak. The Yankees took the opener, 12-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Spud Chandler as sluggers Charlie Keller and Joe Gordon combined for six ribbies. 


July 11 

l BoSox righthander Joe Dobson hurled the season's second no-hitter, blanking the Philadelphia A's, 5-0. The win improved his record to 11-1. Ted Williams and Johnny Pesky homered for Boston.
l Chicago White Sox first baseman Joe Kuhel walked four times and swiped three bases in a losing cause as the St. Louis Browns topped Chicago, 3-2, on a Walt Judnich walk-off home run with two out in the bottom of the ninth.

July 12 

l Detroit Tigers starter Charley Fuchs walked nine batters in a 6-1 loss to the Red Sox. Ted Williams clouted his 12th home run for Boston.

July 13 

l In a slugfest, the Washington Senators and the Philadelphia A's combined for 33 hits as Washington topped the A's, 8-7, in 10 innings.

July 15 

l George Case homered twice and drove in seven runs as the Washington Senators buried Chicago, 21-1. Teammate Bruce Campbell added four more ribbies, collecting four hits in six at bats, including a home run of his own. The loss was Chicago's sixth straight.

July 16 

l Senators second baseman Bob Repass drove in six runs with a pair of home runs in an 11-4 win over the Chicago White Sox.
l In one of the league's more sloppily played games, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees combined for seven errors, three by Red Sox pitcher Yank Terry, in a 17-3 Boston loss.

July 17 

l Red Sox ace Joe Dobson (12-1) became the league's first 12-game winner, shutting out the White Sox, 7-0, for his seventh consecutive win. 

July 19 

l After collecting three hits in the opening game of a doubleheader against the Senators, Yankees first baseman Buddy Hasset went hitless in the nightcap, ending his hitting streak after 18 games. Meanwhile, teammate Joe Gordon was perfect at the plate, 8 for 8, as New York took both ends of the twin bill from Washington, 6-1 and 8-6, widening its lead to a game and a half over the second-place Red Sox.  

July 24 

l The New York Yankees downed Washington, 6-3, handing Senators southpaw Walt Masterson his seventh straight loss. Charlie Keller drove in three of New York's runs with a pair of doubles.

July 26 

l In the season's longest extra-inning game, the Cleveland Indians came up with five runs in the top of the 15th inning to down the Chicago White Sox, 7-2. Indians starter Mel Harder scattered four hits in 12 innings of work, without a decision.

July 29 

l Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio went 0 for 3 in a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Browns, ending a 17-game hitting streak.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


NATIONAL LEAGUE

July 1 
l Cardinals second baseman Jimmy Brown went 5 for 5 as Harry Gumbert shut out the Chicago Cubs, 15-0. Enos Slaughter and catcher Ken O'Dea each had four ribbies for St. Louis.

July 2 
l Phillies catcher Bennie Warren struck out four times in a 4-2 loss to the Giants. Southpaw Carl Hubbell, used as a spot starter for most of the season, went the distance for New York, striking out nine along the way.

July 3 
l Cardinals pitcher Mort Cooper became the season's first 13-game winner, shutting out the Chicago Cubs, 14-0, on three hits. Second baseman Jimmy Brown collected six hits in seven at bats for St. Louis, part of the Cards 22-hit outburst.   

July 5
l Dolph Camilli's grand slam home run in the bottom of the eighth inning sent the Dodgers on their way to an 11-6 win over St. Louis. In all, Camilli drove in six runs as Brooklyn moved within two games of the first-place Cardinals. Cards right fielder Enos Slaughter tripled in the fourth inning, extending his hitting streak to 17 games.

July 12
l Boston Braves first baseman Buddy Gremp committed three of his team's five errors in a 9-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

July 13
l Cardinals starter Murry Dickson walked 10 in a 10-9 loss to the New York Giants. Stan Musial starred at the plate for St. Louis, knocking in five of the Cards' runs. 
l Braves catcher Ernie Lombardi had six ribbies as Boston blanked the Pirates, 15-0.

July 15
l Reds starter Paul Derringer hurled 12 innings in Cincinnati's 17-inning, 2-1 loss to the Cubs.

July 19
l The Cardinals downed Boston, 5-1, handing Braves starting pitcher Lou Tost (2-8) his seventh straight loss.
l Giants outfielder Babe Barna went 0 for 3 in the first of two games against the Cubs, snapping a 17-game hitting streak.

July 21
l Reds starter Paul Derringer went 11 innings in Cincinnati's 14-inning, 3-2 loss to Brooklyn.

July 22
l Cardinals starter Mort Cooper served up four home runs in his team's 21-5 win over the New York Giants.  Jimmy Brown scored four times for St. Louis and starred at the plate with a home run and three ribbies. In all, the two teams combined for eight home runs.

July 23
l Cardinals center fielder Terry Moore walked four times in a 6-5 loss to the New York Giants.

July 26
l Phillies righthander Rube Melton fanned 11 in a 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards Enos Slaughter went 0 for 3 in the game, ending his hitting streak at 17 games.

July 29
l Cardinals hurler Johnny Beazley (13-1, 1.25) won his 12th straight decision, shutting out the Boston Braves, 9-0, on one hit.

July 30
l Philadelphia shortstop Danny Murtaugh swiped three bases in a 2-0 win over the Dodgers.

July 31
l The St. Louis Cardinals split a doubleheader with Cincinnati ending their winning streak at eight games. St. Louis won the opener, 6-4, but dropped the nightcap, 3-2.
