AMERICAN LEAGUE

Aug. 1
PHILADELPHIA -- Red Sox catcher Bill Conroy socked a pair of home runs and had 6 RBIs in Boston's 13-1 win over the A's. 

Aug. 5 
l CHICAGO -- Tigers righthander Dizzy Trout hurled 12 innings in Detroit's 4-3 loss to the White Sox.
l CLEVELAND -- Indians center fielder Roy Weatherly homered three times off Browns starter Eldon Auker in the second game of a twin bill, sweeping St. Louis 2-1 and 6-5. In all, seven balls left the park including three served up by Cleveland starter Roy Poat.

Aug. 6

WASHINGTON -- Red Sox starter Charlie Wagner gave up 11 earned runs in Boston's 12-5 loss to the Senators.

Aug. 9 

NEW YORK -- The Detroit Tigers topped the Yankees, 5-4, in 14 innings to snap an eight-game losing streak.


Aug. 10 

ST. LOUIS -- Indians center fielder Buster Mills hit for the cycle as Cleveland extended its winning streak to six games, trouncing the Browns, 16-4. In all, 20 runs crossed the plate on 33 hits.

Aug. 14 

PHILADELPHIA -- White Sox second baseman Don Kolloway homered twice and drove in six runs in a losing cause as the A's topped Chicago, 10-7. 

Aug. 16 

l PHILADELPHIA -- White Sox southpaw Thornton Lee recorded his seventh straight loss after surrendering all 11 runs in Chicago's 11-1 loss to the A's in the second game of a doubleheader. Despite committing five errors, the A's shut out Chicago in the opener, 10-0, behind the five-hit pitching of their starter Phil Marchildon.
l WASHINGTON -- Senators center fielder Stan Spence went 5 for 5 in Washington's 10-9 loss to the St. Louis Browns. 

Aug. 20 

l CLEVELAND -- In one of the more sloppier played games, the Philadelphia A's and Cleveland Indians combined for eight errors, five of them by Philadelphia, as Cleveland trounced the A's, 13-3, in the second game of a twin bill.

l WASHINGTON -- Senators starter Sid Hudson hurled 12 innings in a game eventually won by Chicago, 5-2, in 16 innings.

 

Aug. 22 

WASHINGTON -- White Sox second baseman Skeeter Webb committed three errors in Chicago's 3-2 loss to the Senators. 

Aug. 23 

BOSTON -- Tigers southpaw Roy Henshaw lost his sixth straight decision as the Red Sox shut out Detroit, 7-0, in the second game of a twin bill, on a two-hitter by Yank Terry. Detroit won the opener, 4-3, behind the three-hit pitching of Dizzy Trout, who recorded his 11th win.

Aug. 25 

ST. LOUIS -- White Sox starter John Humphries gave up 17 hits in a 16-1 loss to the Browns. Browns outfielder Chet Laabs went 4 for 4 with three ribbies.

Aug. 26 

WASHINGTON -- Tigers center fielder Doc Cramer went 3 for 5 against the Senators, extending his hitting streak to 18 games. Detroit beat Washington, 5-2, behind southpaw Hal Newhouser (9-8). 

Aug. 27 

ST. LOUIS - Red Sox hurler Bill Butland (11-2) won his seventh straight decision as Boston Downed the Browns, 12-3.

Aug. 29 

WASHINGTON - Indians southpaw Al Milnar (10-8) won his sixth straight decision, shutting out the Senators, 6-0, on four hits.

Aug. 30 

l ST. LOUIS - Red Sox southpaw Ken Chase (4-6) fanned 13 batters in Boston's 6-4 win over the Browns. Boston's Lou Finney went 4 for 4 and drove in two runs with a home run and a double.

l WASHINGTON - Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau drove in six runs in Cleveland's 10-1 win over the Senators. Mel Harder (8-10) went the distance for Cleveland in his first start after returning from the disabled list.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


NATIONAL LEAGUE

Aug. 1 
PHILADELPHIA -- The Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies hammered out 35 hits in a game won by Philadelphia, 11-5.

Aug. 2 
l BOSTON -- Pirates first baseman Elbie Fletcher went 5 for 5 in Pittsburgh's 6-3 win over the Braves.
l PHILADELPHIA -- Phils starter Tom Hughes (4-16) gave up nine earned runs in 5 1/3 innings as Hi Bithorn (6-11) and the Cubs shut out Philadelphia, 14-0, on four hits.

Aug. 8 
BROOKLYN -- Dodgers center fielder Pete Reiser swiped two bases in a 2-1 loss to the Cubs.

Aug. 12
BROOKLYN -- Cardinals shortstop Marty Marion fanned four times, while teammate Walker Cooper knocked in five runs, as St. Louis opened up a 5 1/2 game lead over the second place Dodgers with a 6-1 win.

Aug. 16
CINCINNATI -- Reds shortstop Eddie Joost swiped two bases in the first game of a doubleheader against the Giants.

Aug. 18
PITTSBURGH -- Cincinnati righthander Bucky Walters (11-11, 2.67) fanned 11 in a 10-1 win over the Pirates. 

Aug. 19
l ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals righthander Johnny Beazley (16-1, 1.12) posted his 15th consecutive win by shutting out Boston, 5-0.
l PITTSBURGH -- Reds southpaw Johnny Vander Meer (12-11, 2.53) walked nine in 5 2/3 innings, losing to the Pirates, 9-6.

Aug. 20
ST. LOUIS -- Despite nine free passes issued by Giants starter Dave Koslo, New York topped the Cardinals, 7-4, behind the slugging of Mel Ott and Johnny Mize. The two combined for six ribbies and three home runs, two of them by Mize.

Aug. 21
CHICAGO -- Cubs outfielder Dom Dallesandro had a perfect afternoon at the plate, going 5 for 5 with a home run and four ribbies in an 8-1 win over Philadelphia. Lon Warneke (5-1, 1.81) went the distance for Chicago to record the win.

Aug. 23
PITTSBURGH -- Pirates outfielder Vince DiMaggio struck out four times in Pittsburgh's 5-4 loss to the Giants. First baseman Johnny Mize drove in a pair of runs for New York with his 29th home run.

Aug. 28
CHICAGO -- In a pitchers' duel at Wrigley Field, Cubs righthander Claude Passeau (11-11, 3.46) went the distance, 12 innings, as the Cubs edged the league-leading Cardinals, 2-1. Cards starter Mort Cooper (19-6, 2.20) fanned 11 in 11 innings of work.  

Aug. 29
CINCINNATI -- The Reds downed Philadelphia, 3-1, handing Phils starter Tom Hughes (4-21, 4.24) his ninth straight loss.

Aug. 30
l CINCINNATI - A single by Phils outfielder Danny Litwhiler was the only hit allowed by Reds hurler Ray Starr (13-11, 2.04) in shutting out Philadelphia, 1-0. Reds catcher Ray Lamanno extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a single in the fifth inning off of Phils starter Rube Melton (11-12, 1.95), who struck out 10 in a losing cause.
l CHICAGO -- Despite committing five errors, three by first baseman Rip Russell, the Cubs held off the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-4, in the second game of a twin bill at Wrigley Field. Phil Cavaretta and Clyde McCullough starred at the plate for Chicago, combining for six hits and six ribbies. On the losing side, St. Louis starter Max Lanier (11-5, 3.04) allowed 15 hits in six innings of work.
l NEW YORK -- Braves southpaw Lou Tost (2-12) lost his 11th straight decision as the Giants nipped Boston, 2-1.
